Multi-tier visibility is the ability of a large consignee to see the status of a shipment along the entire chain — from their procurement office to the forwarder, from the forwarder to the carrier, from the carrier to the driver, from the driver to the final recipient — in real time, without picking up the phone. It doesn't mean "see everything as the forwarder does". It means seeing your own slice filtered correctly: delivery ETA, freshly uploaded digital PoD, any delays against contractual SLAs. Pricing, subcarrier names and operational details remain with the forwarder; the consignee sees what they need to close their downstream process.
Why it's needed today (and why it's not just "tracking")
Three pressures pushing large consignees to ask multi-tier visibility from their forwarders.
End-customer pressure. The Amazon-trained B2C consumer raised the bar in B2B too: the procurement lead wants to answer "the truck is 30 km away, arriving in 40 minutes" without having to message the forwarder every time.
Internal operational pressure. Inbound warehouses allocate dock slots. Without reliable ETA, the dock manager wastes time reassigning slots when a truck is late. Waste is documented in dock idle time, idle workers, dock cluster.
CSRD and compliance pressure. The CSRD-subject consignee must produce documentary evidence (digital PoD, delivery records, GPS) for Scope 3 reporting. Without direct visibility, depends on the forwarder for every request — slow and costly when historical data run into thousands.
What the consignee sees, what they don't
Multi-tier visibility is not "total transparency". It's role-based filtering per agreed rules.
Sees:
- Real-time estimated ETA to recipient
- Shipment status (assigned, in transit, in delivery, delivered)
- Freshly uploaded digital PoD (with GPS at upload if agreed)
- Any delays against contractual SLAs with automatic notification
- Delivery history for performance analysis
Doesn't see:
- Subcarrier identity if the forwarder uses multiple subcarriers
- Rate applied to the subcarrier
- Driver's direct contacts (unless explicitly agreed)
- Comparative performance of forwarder's subcarriers
- Forwarder's internal commercial data
The filter matters: without it, the forwarder "loses" the intermediation value. With the filter, their position is protected and the consignee gets the information value they need.
Multi-channel notifications per actor
Visibility is not just a "consult dashboard": notifications arrive to the right actor on the right channel.
Sender — receives notification when carrier confirms pickup (to plan outbound warehouse).
Recipient — receives notification X minutes before estimated arrival, with optional public tracking link to view position (no login).
Consignee buyer — receives notification when delivery happens + link to digital PoD, useful to close the purchase order and enable invoice payment.
Forwarder — receives notifications only for exceptions: delays above threshold, stale GPS, missed pickup, unresponsive carrier. Everything else is handled automatically by routine voice AI calls.
Carrier and driver — receive their operational notifications (loading order, schedule changes, PoD reminder), nothing commercial.
Real-time ETA — how it's generated
Three combined data sources generate a reliable ETA for the recipient.
1. Driver app GPS — if the carrier uses the forwarder's driver app, position is continuous. ETA computed live.
2. Tracking voice AI — Sara calls the carrier's operations contact before critical legs and collects declared ETA. Updates state even when GPS is stale.
3. Deterministic detectors — geofence entry, geofence exit, delay > X min over expected. Events updating state without human intervention.
The ETA shown to the recipient is a blend of these sources, with confidence score. When confidence drops below threshold (e.g. stale GPS + voice AI cannot reach the carrier), the consignee dashboard signals it instead of showing falsely precise data.
Integration with the forwarder's TMS
Multi-tier visibility doesn't replace the forwarder's TMS — it enriches it. The visibility platform receives from the TMS:
- Shipment registry (origin, destination, sender, recipient, consignee, SLA)
- Assigned carrier registry
- Special indications (refrigerated, ADR, last mile, unloading slot)
And returns to the TMS:
- Real-time shipment status
- Digital PoD at upload time
- Exceptions with timestamp
- Voice AI call history for audit
FAQ
Can the consignee see the subcarrier identity?
By default no — it's a protection of the forwarder's commercial value. Visibility shows the consignee only the shipment status, not who is materially handling it. If forwarder and consignee agree to "full transparency" (for strategic long-term agreements), the filter can be selectively relaxed.
How is the public tracking link sent to the recipient?
Typically via SMS or automatic email generated by the platform some hours before estimated arrival, or on recipient request. The link is token-based, accessing a public page without login showing the truck position and updated ETA. No sensitive data, only position and time.
Is real-time ETA reliable on long lanes?
Reliability depends on data source quality. On short lane with active driver app, very reliable (typical error < 15 min). On long lane with carrier without driver app and voice AI as only source, less precise but with explicit confidence score. The dashboard shows confidence level to avoid false positives.
What happens on a critical delay?
Automatic notification to the forwarder as "exception" as soon as the delay detector fires (e.g. estimated ETA divergent > 90 min from expected). The consignee receives notification only if agreed in contractual SLA, to avoid redundant alerts during the forwarder's handling process.
Does it integrate with our existing TMS?
Yes, integration is via REST API or EDI for the main European TMS. Multi-tier visibility doesn't replace the TMS: it reads shipment and carrier registries from the TMS, returns real-time status and digital PoD. Average integration time: 2-4 weeks for standard setup.
